For those who keep up with our Service Dogs in training via social media, you might notice that our Service Dogs in Training spend a fair bit of time outside of the facility! We call these excursions field trips, and they serve a very important role in our Service Dogs and their training.

Our Service Dogs in training need exposure to everyday places, such as movie theaters, grocery stores, and restaurants! These places are the most typical locations that their handler will visit with them, and we need to ensure that our Service Dogs in Training can navigate supporting their Warrior while also not being distracted, distracting, and obtrusive. For field trips like these, our trainers practice frequently used commands. For example, a trainer might approach a counter to order a meal, but place their Service Dog in Training in a “down” before ordering. This allows them to keep their dog close, and out of the way from people around them. Trainers also will commonly tell Service Dogs in Training to “go in” under their booth or table for the same reason! A “go in” is where a Service Dog will go under a table or desk to prevent themselves from obstructing a walk way.

Movie theaters provide a unique challenge to Service Dogs in Training. Space can be a little tight, and there is the added temptation for the inevitable pieces of popcorn on the ground. Movies also can be very stimulating, so trainers work very hard to support dogs during these challenging trips with plenty of encouragement and guidance.

Another common place, and is required ADI training, is a bowling alley. Bowling alleys are usually pretty busy, and have a lot of unique sounds to them. The pins knocking over, the machinery for the lanes, and a bustling crowd are all things that our Service Dogs in Training need to be unphased by. Our Washington Site hosted a volunteer event last year with REI to have volunteers bowl around our Service Dogs in Training! Bowling alleys are similar to movie theaters with plenty of tempting food- but our Service Dogs in Training behave pretty well around it!

There are also field trips for exposure to not so common things- like arcades, children’s museums, parades, and more! These field trips are especially important as life features more than just going to work, the store, or out to eat. Field trips of this nature can feature a ride on public transportation, seeing large items such as forklifts at work in a hardware store, walking through large holiday decorations, and other less common occurrences.

Field trips are vital to our training, and they can’t happen without the support of our gracious donors. With your generous support, we can continue to ensure that our Service Dogs in Training are able to go on plenty of outings to be able to continue their training!

What is Exposure in Service Dog Training?

Exposure in Service Dog training refers to the practice of introducing puppies to a broad spectrum of stimuli, situations, and environments. This method goes beyond early socialization to include ongoing experiences that help puppies adapt to new challenges and settings throughout their developmental stages. The goal is to ensure that each puppy is well-prepared for the unpredictability of real-world scenarios they will encounter in their roles as Service Dogs.

Why Exposure Matters

1. Building Confidence: Continuous exposure helps puppies build and maintain confidence by familiarizing them with new and potentially challenging situations. A confident Service Dog can handle unexpected events with composure and effectiveness.

2. Enhancing Adaptability: Through exposure to diverse environments and experiences, puppies learn to adapt quickly and effectively. This adaptability is crucial for a Service Dog, who must navigate various settings, from crowded public spaces to quiet, unfamiliar areas.

3. Strengthening Problem-Solving Skills: Exposure to different challenges, such as novel objects or complex environments, helps puppies develop strong problem-solving skills. These cognitive abilities are essential for mastering the tasks required of a Service Dog.

4. Promoting Physical and Sensory Development: Regular exposure to different physical environments and sensory experiences helps puppies develop their muscular coordination and sensory perception. This comprehensive development ensures that they are physically and mentally prepared for their service roles.

Exposure Activities at Paws for Purple Hearts

We integrate a variety of exposure activities into our puppies' routines to ensure they develop into confident and adaptable Service Dogs. Here are a few examples:

●      Sensory Exploration: We continually introduce our puppies to a range of textures, sounds, and objects. This ongoing sensory stimulation helps them remain curious and responsive to their environment.

●      Socialization with Diverse Groups: Puppies interact with a wide range of people, including different ages, ethnicities, and personalities. These interactions help them become comfortable and effective in various social settings.

●      Problem-Solving Challenges: We expose puppies to a variety of problem-solving scenarios, from navigating obstacles to interacting with new tools. These challenges encourage cognitive growth and adaptability.

Varied Outdoor Experiences: Our puppies experience different outdoor environments, such as urban areas, parks, and crowded spaces. This variety ensures they are comfortable in multiple settings and can handle diverse stimuli.

Paws for Purple Hearts Virginia is located in Caroline County, a region known for its beautiful rural landscapes and tight-knit community bonds. In April, we reached out to the local residents for assistance with our Adopt-a-Highway cleanup, and the response was overwhelming! Alongside our dedicated regular volunteers, members of the Ladysmith Ruritan Club played a huge role in lending their helping hands! We were so honored to see so many people that recognize the importance of supporting charities that help Veterans! Working on our designated two-mile highway stretch, our wonderful volunteers managed to collect an impressive thirty-three bags of trash!

The support from our community continued to pour in that day. Giuseppe’s, a local Italian restaurant, generously provided free pizzas to reward our hardworking volunteers. Their ice cream stand, Nina’s Sweet Treats, even offered to host a Doggie Ice Cream Social fundraiser for Paws For Purple Hearts. We’re so appreciative of Giuseppe’s and Nina’s Sweet Treats not only for rewarding our volunteers, but also for their effort in raising funds for our cause of providing assistance dogs, Canine-Assisted Warrior Therapy® and social therapy to our Warriors all at no cost. We’re very blessed to have such close ties and generous support from our community!

Thanks to our volunteers’ efforts, the Virginia Department of Transportation will be installing a Adopt-a-Highway sign along the roadway displaying Paws For Purple Hearts’ name. This sign not only acknowledges the hard work of our volunteers in keeping Caroline County litter-free, but also serves as a means to spread our organization’s name and mission out to the thousands of individuals who traverse that road daily.

Let’s give a big round of applause to our newest Assistance Dog graduates! This past March, our San Antonio team hosted the most recent Client Training and Assistance Dog Graduation ceremony, celebrating our two newest Assistance Dog Teams. For those who may not know what Client Training entails, it is two intensive weeks of training where both humans and canines work together to learn and understand each other. There, they take their first steps to build a lifelong bond and relationship. After successfully completing Client Training, we honored and celebrated these two teams at The University of Texas at San Antonio’s Main Campus, sponsored by our partners at the Center for Military Affiliated Students. Our graduation ceremony was held on March 30th and the Texas weather could not have been better to have all of our community members join us to celebrate. Not only that, but we were able to have Congressman Tony Gonzales (TX-23) as our Keynote Speaker at our graduation ceremony! Now let’s meet our two new Assistance Dogs!

Our Spring 2024 Grads!

First, we would like to introduce Service Dog Eaton. She is a beautiful, black Labrador Retriever who is 3 years old and was raised and trained at our San Antonio, TX site. She loves to snuggle with her favorite humans and also enjoys playtime with her canine friends! During her training, she participated in our Canine Assisted Warrior Therapy® program and positively impacted many Veterans who came through our doors. She is now fulfilling her purpose by progressing onto her next chapter as a Service Dog. Eaton’s calm demeanor and gentle spirit make her the perfect match for Marc!

Next, we would like to introduce Facility Dog David. He is a handsome Labrador and Golden Retriever cross who turned 3 this April and was raised and trained at our Ruther Glen, VA site. David has the calmest personality and is always down for a snuggle! He has the most beautiful eyes and he loves to give gentle kisses. He also enjoys running around with his soccer ball on his off time! His calm temperament and relaxing energy make him the perfect Facility Dog for Staci!

We couldn’t be more excited to see these two new teams complete their training and be celebrated for all of their hard work over the last two to three years. These two newly appointed Assistance Dogs are off on their new adventures with their new handlers, and we are so excited to see all of the things they accomplish!

On March 23rd, 2024, Paws for Purple Hearts San Diego hosted their 2024 Service Dog Graduation Ceremony! Marking the culmination of a two-week client training period and the beginning of life-changing partnerships, Veterans George Bessen and Nicholas Rusanoff took center stage alongside their newly placed Service Dogs, Lofstedt and Nina, at the graduation ceremony.

The ceremony was a poignant acknowledgment of the dedication and perseverance displayed by both Veterans and their Service Dogs throughout the training program. Amidst speeches from program leaders and trainers, the spotlight shone brightly on the heroes of the day – George and Nicholas.

Family members, friends, and the community gathered to honor the Veterans’ achievements and the newly formed bond forged between them and their Service Dogs. Paws for Purple Hearts San Diego’s graduation ceremony not only celebrated individual successes, but also highlighted the collective journey towards improved quality of life and enhanced independence.

Just like humans, dogs need regular grooming to keep their skin and coat healthy. Brushing removes dead hair, dirt, and debris, and thus prevents matting and tangling. Can you believe that PPH Washington is turning ONE YEAR old? It seems like just yesterday Paws for Purple Hearts was scoping out a facility with baby Ericson in tow. In a short year, our site has made huge strides.

To start, Paws for Purple Hearts Washington has served 75 Veterans in the first six months of CAWTS. Our goal for our second year in operation is to double that and serve 150. To do so, we plan on expanding both our staff and facility size in the coming year! This is very exciting as the more staff, space, and Service Dogs in Training we have, the more Warriors we can serve.

Expanding our capacity and reach is important. When we aid a Veteran in Social Therapy, CAWTS, or by placing a dog with them, we are not only helping them find a new purpose or mitigating issues, we are helping the community around them. When one person’s life is improved, the people they interact with everyday are positively affected, which positively affects the people around them, and so on. A community well served starts with one person.

That’s what fuels Paws for Purple Hearts Washington. A staff dedicated to service and positive impact is what makes the difference.

You may be wondering if we have any plans to celebrate our one year anniversary- and boy do we! On February 24th from 11 AM- 2PM, our doors will be open to the public. All community members are welcome to visit us, learn about what we do, how we do it, and get plenty of puppy kisses, of course!

If you’re in the place to give, we will gladly accept donations. It costs around $35,000.00 to train our skilled Service Dogs to support our Warriors. We also will have plenty of PPH swag and photo opportunities for those who want to commemorate with us!

Should you not be able to attend, but still want to support us in a special way, consider donating to us between February 15th and 20th on our site. For every $15.00 donation allocated to us through our site, we will mail you a (poorly) hand drawn picture of your pet in your receipt!

As far as providing companionship, dogs have been man’s best friend for at least 14,000 years! When exactly dogs were first used to help people with disabilities remains a mystery, but ancient artwork from Pompei and China, appear to depict scenes in which dogs are being used to guide people with visual impairments.

In 1785, a Frenchman named Valentin Haüy founded the First Institute for Blind Children and introduced the idea of using dogs to help those with visual impairments, but it took until after World War I for the modern Guide Dog movement to be developed. War Dogs were retrained from their battlefield duties to assist thousands of soldiers who lost their vision to combat and mustard gas. The success of these dogs in giving soldiers back their independence led to the establishment of formal Guide Dog training programs.

As the understanding of the capabilities of dogs grew, so did the range of tasks dogs could perform. In 1975, our very own president and CEO, Dr. Bonita “Bonnie” Bergin, coined the concept and term “Service Dog.” Dr. Bergin realized that in addition to servicing individuals with visual impairments, dogs could be trained to assist with mobility and psychiatric conditions as well.

In 1991, Dr. Bergin went on to spearhead the founding of The Bergin College of Canine Studies; the only school dedicated to educating dog trainers. Bergin held a program at El Camino Continuation High School in which students assisted in the training of dogs to serve people with disabilities. This program was expanded to include the local juvenile detention center in order to give at risk teens purpose and greater self-esteem.

Dr. Bergin says one of her staff came back from the juvenile detention center program and said when he was watching a newscast about the struggles of Veterans in reintegrating into society, he realized this sort of Canine-Assisted recreational therapy program was an absolute perfect fit for our Warriors, and in 2006 this program became the beginning of the Paws for Purple Hearts we know and love today! In July 2008, Paws for Purple Hearts held the first Canine-Assisted Warrior Therapy® program at the Palo Alto VA’s Men’s Trauma Recovery Program in Menlo Park, California, with one hundred and thirty participants. Patients immediately responded to learning how to train dogs as a form of therapy for themselves and reported feeling a greater sense of purpose knowing that they have a new mission of helping a comrade-in-arms by helping to train a Service Dog. From the success of the program, Paws For Purple Hearts expanded to the East Coast, and presently has six facilities nationwide.

Guide Dogs were the only type of Service Dogs legally recognized in the United States, until 1990, when the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed, ensuring individuals with disabilities have the right to be accompanied by their Service Dog in public places. From Guide Dogs, to Psychiatric Service Dogs, to Mobility, or Medical Alert Dogs, it’s absolutely astounding how many ways these amazing canines have come to help people. We may not know when dogs first began serving humans, but we know for certain that the love between humans and dogs is a tale that’s older than recorded time!

Other Ways You Can Help

All of our sites vary in the specific volunteer support needed, so here are five ways you can help each site, even if you are not co-located:

1). Monetary and In-Kind donations.

One of the easiest ways to support our canines and the veterans we serve is to make a monetary donation (online, by check, or in person at your local PPH site) or an in-kind donation by sending a gift through Amazon. Each site has an Amazon Wish List, which includes everything from dog treats and toys to cleaning and office supplies. These are our most used and most-needed items for our programs and Canine-Assisted Warrior Therapy® sessions. By purchasing from our Amazon Wishlist, you are directly providing a much-needed item to help train our dogs and ultimately help our Veterans in need. You can find each site’s wishlist here.

2). Donate a service.

Monetary and in-kind donations are not the only way to support us, especially if you work for or own a company that provides services that can assist our programs. Services like janitorial cleaning, landscaping, and building maintenance are all services that are incredibly beneficial for all of our sites. If you are interested in providing your company’s service to your local PPH site, please reach out and see how you can best help!

3). Fundraise with your company or community.

We know it is not always feasible to block off time in your busy day to volunteer in person. However, there are many other ways you can help support our cause! If you have a knack for fundraising or community outreach, you can help by organizing a community fundraiser to raise money or goods for your local PPH site. Holding a community event to make things like tug ropes, snuffle mats, or other DIY enrichment items is a great way to help our Service Dogs in Training as well. Another option is to explore whether your company offers volunteer opportunities as a company (group volunteer days), fundraising options for select nonprofits, or a Matching Gift Program where your workplace may double a donation you make to our organization.

4). Follow us on social media.

Everyone has their limitations on what they can do during their day. Even if you cannot volunteer in person, following us on social media is another great way to support PPH! Each region or site has its own Facebook and Instagram profiles, which you can follow and share with your friends and family. You can follow Paws for Purple Hearts on X and LinkedIn to share updates with your professional network, too. Sharing any posts, event updates, and organization information with your peers helps expand our online presence and reach more people who may need our services or who would like to support us!

5). Spread the word!

No social media? No problem! Just talking about our mission and spreading the word about PPH with your friends, family, coworkers, and neighbors makes an immense difference in gaining the support we need. The more people know about us, the more connections made, the more we Veterans reach, and the better we can achieve our mission!

We are so appreciative of all of the support from our volunteers and champions, and know that with your support we will be able to continue growing and helping more Veterans around this great country.

Despite being the youngest of the site, our Lakewood facility manages to keep busy out in the community, and this holiday season is no exception.

With the advent of Advent and a very young Service Dog in Training (#pphOlivia!) joining the team, Paws for Purple Hearts Washington has been out and about in the community on plenty of fun field trips, events, and volunteer opportunities.

To start, Paws for Purple Hearts Washington was chosen by REI to be their organization during the month of November to raise funds for. We were surprised with the funds by their outreach coordinator, Danielle Anderson. This gift was greatly appreciated, thank you REI!

Our Trainers and their Marketing and Communications Specialist (MCS) had the privilege to take part in the Lakewood Christmas Parade! Due to the weather being wetter and colder than anticipated, our Service Dogs in Training stayed home and warm. It’s never fun to exclude them, but their safety and wellness is paramount to their training! Nevertheless, the humans braved the cold and wet and made it a parade to remember!

Washington Staff and Service Dogs in Training also took a long field trip to the Seattle Christmas Market! While there, the dogs got to experience the sites, sounds, and smells of a market. Despite there being plenty of tantalizing food, our Service Dogs in Training resisted temptation! They were even rewarded a free bandana from a vendor. 

Pivoting to civic service, our MCS, Sonja, visited with Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s Girl Scout Troop (Troop 43595) to paint paw print ornaments and make Christmas cards for the Washington Soldier’s Home. While there, she gave a presentation to the Girl Scouts on what Service Dogs and Service Dogs in Training do, as well as the best practices for interacting with them out in public. The girls had a great time, and got to leave their meeting with an ornament, new knowledge of Service Dogs, and plenty of PPH swag!

Our Washington site volunteered at the USO at Sea-Tac Airport on December 15 to wrap Christmas gifts for travelers, as well as share the presence of a few of their Service Dogs in Training. This is a wonderful activity for our Service Dogs in Training, as it exposes them to a bustling airport during the busiest season of the year, as well as gives us a chance to give back to service members and their families in a meaningful way.

As for upcoming public events, catch us at the Tacoma Night Market this weekend! We will be hosting a booth there with our dogs for people to meet, and plenty of information for anyone who would like to get involved with volunteering. We are looking forward to expanding our reach in a part of Tacoma we don’t frequent often.

The holidays are here and winter is coming! While the holiday season primarily revolves around gift-giving and spending time with loved ones, it’s important to keep in mind that this season also brings on harsh weather that could affect your pets. At Paws for Purple Hearts, the safety of our Service Dogs-in-Training is of the utmost importance.

While each region may face its own levels of winter weather, the safety practices we use to keep our pups safe are the same across the board. For example, while the San Antonio team rarely experiences snow, they still ensure that the dogs aren’t outside in the cold for too long, wear booties when the temperature is too cold, and have a dry and warm space to rest inside. On the other side of the nation, however, our Alaska team frequently experiences extreme cold and weather conditions.

The Alaska team demonstrates how much of a high priority it is to ensure that their pups-in-training are properly dressed for the inclement weather. Their dogs learn to wear winter accessories like coats and booties to keep them warm to prevent any irritation or damage to their paws.

Tips to Keep Your Pet Safe

While some regions may not experience as harsh of winters as others, it is still best to implement proper weather safety practices for your furry friends. Here are five tips to keep in mind:

1. Keep your pets indoors whenever possible.
   If you feel that the weather is too cold for you to be outside, then chances are that it’s too cold for your pet. Don’t keep your pets outside for long periods during very cold weather. Also keep in mind that while long-haired dogs may tolerate colder temperatures better, short-haired dogs may need a coat or sweater during walks.

2. Provide an outdoor shelter for your pets.
   If your dog is an outdoor dog, make sure they have a dry, draft-free doghouse that is large enough for them to sit and lie down in, but small enough to retain their body heat. Also, make sure that the doghouse is elevated a few inches off the ground, and use cedar shavings or straw to cover it. Lastly, make sure the doghouse has an entrance that faces away from heavy winds and includes a flap made of heavy, waterproof fabric or heavy plastic.

3. Proper feet care.
   Salt and other chemicals that are used to melt ice and snow can harm your furry friend’s paws. After walking your pet outside, be sure to gently rub the bottom of your pet’s paws with a damp towel to remove any irritants, or buy dog boots to prevent any possible paw irritation. During your walks, you should also be mindful of signs that your pet’s feet are uncomfortably cold. This can include frequently lifting their paws, whining, or stopping altogether.

4. Keep your pets leashed near water.
   If your walking route includes walking by bodies of water, keep your pets on a leash, especially if the body of water is frozen. You want to prevent any possibility of your pet running onto the ice and potentially falling through.

5. Do not lock pets in your car.
   Similar to those hotter months of the year, refrain from locking your pets in the car. While you may not be dealing with summer heat, cars can act like a refrigerator in the winter, holding in cold air and putting your pet at risk.

As the cold and rainy season continues to get colder and rainier, pets and pet owners alike may be reluctant to brave the elements and go outdoors for much more than a walk. This can leave owners with an extremely energetic dog and nowhere to go, but there are many activities you can do with your dog to keep them stimulated!

1. Toys and Treats

Rubber Kong toys, lick/snuffle mats or puzzle toys are great ways to keep your dog occupied while also keeping them stimulated. Not only are these items widely available with a huge variety in most pet stores or online, but they are also easy to make! Hop online to check out dozens of guides to all kinds of puzzle or food based toys and games! The best parts about these toys are that they are easily reusable and will keep your dog engaged when you want, just load it up with food or treats and your dog’s interest will be piqued. All this being said, it is important to remember, though, that like humans, dogs can get tired or bored of toys, so having a rotation of toys can help keep your pet engaged.

2. Small Spaces, Big Fun

Everyone has limited space in their homes and figuring out how to utilize that space so that your pet can be active indoors too is important. An activity that takes up very little space compared to other games is playing tug of war or using a flirt toy for a less physically demanding play time, giving some one on one play time with your pet. On the other end of the space spectrum, you can build your furry friend an obstacle course! This is the perfect time to get creative and use whatever you may have to create obstacles. Chairs, blankets, boxes and even brooms can all be used to make your pet work a little bit harder trying to get to the other side. Finally, the tried and true classic fetch is also a fantastic game to play indoors. Buying toys that won’t damage walls that your dog is interested in can make indoor fetch an awesome way to get your dog exercise. Although indoors everyone is confined, maximizing even a small space for a dog can help keep your pet happy and healthy.

3. Dog’s Bestfriend

We all know someone who has multiple dogs and they will just play and play and play with each other. That is because having another dog around is extremely stimulating for your pet. Whether that is a second pet of your own or having doggy playdates with other owners you know, it can do wonders for self-esteem and social skills to be able to play with other dogs and humans.

Of course there are a number of other things you can do with your pet at home and still have a fantastic time, but these are some of the more accessible and cheap ways to keep your pet happy and healthy!

Giving Tuesday, held annually on the first Tuesday following Thanksgiving, is a global generosity movement for supporting charitable organizations. While in the warm afterglow of Thanksgiving dinner and Black Friday shopping with loved ones, we encourage you to reflect on the comforts and freedoms provided to us by the sacrifices made by our Warriors.

Our Service Dogs provide a lifeline for our injured Warriors upon their return home. As of 2022, 27% of all returning Veterans have a service-related disability. Our Service Dogs are taught over 100 different commands to assist with mobility issues with severities up to and including quadriplegia, and to mitigate symptoms of PTSD, TBI, and other trauma-related conditions in order to help our Warriors regain independence. Our Dogs serve our Warriors throughout their training by participating in social therapy and our Canine-Assisted Warrior Therapy Program®, through which each dog will impact the lives of between 40-60 Warriors before placement with their forever Warrior.

Our dogs receive extensive training over two and a half years. It cost $35,000 to fully train a Service Dog, including food, veterinary care, training, and participation in our Canine-Assisted Warrior Therapy® program. Relying primarily on individual donations, we are able to provide our programs and Assistance dogs to our Warriors at no-cost.

On this giving Tuesday, November 28, 2023 we humbly ask that you consider donating to our organization to further our cause of caring for our selfless and dedicated Warriors. There is a search option that will allow you to see if your employer will provide a matching gift as well. By doing so you can double the impact of your donation.

Congratulations to our newest graduates! This Fall, our San Antonio team hosted the most recent Client Training and Assistance Dog Graduation ceremony, celebrating our two newest Service Dog Teams. These teams underwent two intensive weeks of training where both humans and canines worked together to learn and understand each other and take their first steps to building a lifelong bond and relationship. After successfully completing Client Training, we honored and celebrated these two teams at our Graduation ceremony which was held at The Alamo, a historic and renowned landmark of San Antonio, Texas. Our graduation ceremony was held on October 14th and the Texas weather certainly held up from its normal heat to make for a fabulous and cool day. Not only that, but we were able to share the day with the Annular Solar Eclipse that went on during the reception. This certainly made for a day to remember! Now let’s meet our two new Service Dogs!

Our Fall 2023 Grads!

Up first we have Debra, a two-and-a-half-year-old black Labrador/Golden Retriever cross who was trained at our San Antonio, TX site. She’s an amiable-amiable little lady who runs on belly rubs and love. Although Debra is well known for having a social personality, she is quite famous at her site for her “Wednesday Addams” attitude when it comes to photography sessions. Despite that, though, Debra’s attentive eyes and calm demeanor make for a perfect match for her client, Tracey.

Kreitzberg, nicknamed Kai, turned two this August and was trained at our Anchorage, AK facility. Kai is an amiable-expressive young man with a big personality! Kai alternates between a serious and empathetic demeanor with a very intuitive nature about him, but is always ready to show off his silly side. Kai’s ability to connect with those around him and stay in tune with their well-being will make his partnership with Russell one in a million!

We couldn’t be more excited to see these two new Service Dogs complete their training and be celebrated for all of their hard work from over the last two to three years. These two newly appointed Service Dogs are off on their new adventures with their new battle buddies, and we are so excited to see all of the things they accomplish!

Paws for Purple Hearts Washington welcomes you to a Howl-O-Ween extravaganza that promises to be a delightful treat without the spooky tricks! On the 20th of October, from 4 PM to 7 PM, we extend a warm invitation to our beloved community members and their families for an evening filled with laughter, canine charm, delectable treats, and even a chance to win some fantastic prizes!

Our open house is “Great Pumpkin” themed, so expect to see some memorable characters around the office. As an extra special treat, one of our devoted puppy parents, Donna, from Fire It Forward, will be showcasing the mesmerizing art of candy glass blowing – a delightful experience for those with a sweet tooth!

Feeling lucky? Be sure to snag a raffle ticket for your chance to win an enchanting basket of treats (and absolutely no tricks!) All thanks to the generous contributions from JW Woodworking Company and Dancing Goats Coffee, this basket is sure to warm the heart of the lucky winner this fall. The Warrior’s Cookout Fundraiser at PPH San Antonio has come and gone, and what another success it was! The team hosted their 2nd Annual Warrior’s Cookout on-site at their new facility, located on the Northwest side of San Antonio, off of I-10 West. Similar to last year, this year’s Warrior’s Cookout included local veteran’s resources, delicious BBQ from a veteran-owned business, fun activities, a puppy pool party, and a newly added Silent Auction! Our community partners at Valor Healthcare, Arfordable Dog Training, Skylar Blue, and Women Veterans of San Antonio, came out to share information with veterans. Thank you to all of these amazing partners for supporting us! We would also like to thank the generous donors who provided items for our silent auction. With the help of these amazing individuals and organizations, and with the exceptional partnership of Valor Healthcare, we were able to raise over $15,000 this year! Last but not least, a hearty ‘thank you’ to all of our volunteers who gave their time to make this event a success.

This year, Valor Healthcare selected Team San Antonio as the beneficiary for their annual Valor 4 Veterans fundraiser. Valor Healthcare and its dedicated team of professionals serving American Veterans from coast to coast, along with their fundraising program, Valor 4 Veterans, strives to make a meaningful difference in the lives of our Veterans. With the support of Valor, more than $12,000 was raised through their exclusive t-shirt, bandana, and other PPH/Valor merchandise sales. Not only did they help raise money to go towards our programming, but they also brought a group of their own staff members all the way from Dallas to volunteer their time!
